Himeji Castle floats in the pitch-black night, bathed in pure white light. Captured during an exclusive, limited-access night tour, this image reveals a mystical and solemn "White Heron" completely different from its daytime appearance.

The Story

Bathed in white light, Himeji Castle emerges from the darkness of the night. Its appearance exudes a mystical, ethereal beauty that is entirely different from its imposing daytime presence. From right to left, the entire complex of the Main Keep, West Small Keep, and Inui Small Keep stands out sharply against the pitch-black sky.

I took this photograph while participating in a special Himeji Castle Night Tour. With only about 10 participants and no other tourists around, it felt as though we had rented out the entire castle for ourselves—an incredibly luxurious and tranquil experience.

I shot this from just in front of a small moat called "Sangoku-bori." At this hour, the castle was illuminated solely by white light. In the next photograph (View No. 26), you will see it lit up in colorful lights. However, true to its name, the "White Heron Castle" (Shirasagi-jo), I personally believe this pure, unadulterated white light suits it best.
