Hishi no Mon: Flower of Momoyama and Memories of Opening the Gate

The largest gate in the castle, "Hishi no Mon" (Diamond Gate), welcomes you just past the ticket booth. This is an unforgettable record of a night when I physically opened and closed this masterpiece of Azuchi-Momoyama architecture during a special tour.
The Story
Just past the ticket gates, as you head toward the heart of Himeji Castle, the first thing to welcome you is this magnificent structure: the "Hishi no Mon" (Diamond Gate).
While many of the castle's gates are purely practical and austere, this one vividly retains the glamorous architectural style of the Azuchi-Momoyama period. The elegant curves of the bell-shaped Katomado window on the second floor, paired with the striking contrast between the black lacquered lattice windows and the bright white plaster, are truly breathtaking.
Actually, during the "Himeji Castle Premium Night Tour" when this photo was taken, our group split into two and we were allowed to physically experience opening and closing this massive gate ourselves. The physical weight and profound emotion of moving an authentic castle gate with hundreds of years of history by my own hands are deeply etched in my memory. It is a highly memorable experience—and photograph—that allowed me not just to admire a beautiful building, but to directly touch history.
