"Where exactly is this?" — Even among local Himeji residents, very few could correctly identify the location just by looking at this photograph. It is a best-kept secret walking path where the quiet, everyday life of the castle town blends seamlessly with breathtaking autumn foliage.
Located along the western inner moat is a tranquil promenade known as "Senhime's Path" (Senhime-no-Komichi). This spot offers a deep, atmospheric elegance (fuzei) that differs entirely from the grand, overwhelming scale of the main castle views.
As autumn deepens, the trees turn vibrant shades of yellow and fiery red. The handrail visible in the foreground belongs to Senhime's Path, running alongside a clear, murmuring stream. Combined with the traditional townhouses (machiya) of the neighboring Korikicho district and a subtle glimpse of the westernmost edge of the Nishi-no-Maru (Western Bailey) peeking through the leaves, the scene resembles a flawless traditional Japanese painting.
While dynamic views featuring the Main Keep are magnificent, it is in these understated, quiet landscapes along the moat that you can truly feel the profound depth of Himeji Castle — a fortress that has peacefully coexisted with the daily lives of the townspeople for over 400 years.
