Himeji Castle shows an entirely different face depending on the angle. From the summit of Otokoyama, reached after climbing 198 steps, you can see all three small keeps and find yourself perfectly eye-level with the Main Keep.

The Story

The architectural greatness of Himeji Castle lies in the fact that the Main Keep does not stand alone. It is connected to three smaller keeps by roofed passages.

The view from Otokoyama is special for two main reasons. First, looking from this northwestern direction, you can see all the small keeps simultaneously: the West Small Keep on the lower right, the Inui Small Keep closest to you in the center foreground, and the East Small Keep tucked away in the deep left. This layout perfectly highlights an overwhelming architectural complexity and formidable defense seen in few other castles.

Second is the brilliant reversal of elevation. The summit of Otokoyama, reached after a breathless climb up exactly 198 steep steps, sits at an elevation of approximately 57.5 meters. This is actually over 10 meters higher than the stone base of Himeyama (approx. 45.8 meters) where the castle stands. Because of this, you don't look up at the castle. Instead, you look slightly down upon the intricate, overlapping roofs of the three smaller keeps, while finding yourself perfectly eye-level with the middle floors of the Main Keep. It is an unparalleled premium seat to accurately grasp the true three-dimensional shape and massive scale of the fortress.
